Do Danish citizens need a visa to Russia?

Yes, they do!

In this article you’ll learn about different Russian visa types, documents to be collected for your visa application, visa fees and processing time, but what’s more important – we’ve prepared a simple step-by step-guide for you. With our guide you’ll be able to obtain your Russian visa on your own, without the need to pay any visa agencies. Read on and get prepared for your trip with us.

Step 1. Select an appropriate visa type for your trip

There are several types of Russian visa. Your task is to choose the one corresponding to your purpose of travel, duration of stay in Russia and the ability of your Russian host to provide you with the necessary invitation. Read below and choose the visa type for you.

Russian Tourist visa for Danish citizens

Maximum stay in Russia: no more than 30 days

Number of entries: single, double

Travel purpose:

Visa support provided by the Russian side: confirmation from a Russian registered tour operator that the tourist will be hosted by the tourist company. 

Russian Private visa for Danish citizens

Maximum stay in Russia: no longer than 90 days

Number of entries – single or double

Purpose of trip – enter Russia as guests of Russian citizens or permanent residents of Russia (friends or relatives)

Visa support provided by the Russian side: Invitation to enter Russia issued by the MIA (Ministry of Internal Affairs) of Russia following a request of the host Russian citizen

Such invitation is issued in electronic or paper form after 20 working days. Your Russian host will have to produce financial statements and guarantees for your stay. If you believe it’s not possible or too complicated, consider coming as a simple tourist instead.

Russian Business/ Humanitarian visa for Danish citizens

Maximum stay in Russia: no longer than 90 days out of each 180. A visa can be issued for up to 1 year.

Number of entries: single, double or multiple

Purpose of trip:

– entering Russia to look for Russian partners, take part in business meetings, conferences, negotiations

– purchase goods and services, research the market

– provide trainings, maintenance work (Technical Maintenance)

– do commercial activities (Commercial)

– drive road vehicles around Russia (Driver)

– fly aircraft (sub-purpose Pilot/ Crew Member)

– as a child accompanying parents in a business trip (Family Member)

– attend sports, cultural, political, religious, charity, volunteer etc. events, or supply humanitarian aid (Humanitarian type)

Visa support provided by the Russian side: an official letter of support from a registered Russian company, or an electronic invitation issued by MIA or a telex directive by MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) of Russia upon request of the host Russian company

Russian Transit visa for Danish citizens

Maximum stay in Russia – up to 3 days for air connections, up to 10 days for crossing Russian territory by road or railway

Number of entries – single

Purpose of trip – crossing through Russia following to another state of destination.

Visa support provided by the Russian side – purchased tickets to and from Russia

Russian Student visa for Danish citizens

Maximum stay in Russia – from 90 days and more if required by the study course. A visa is issued for 90 days, but can be extended in Russia depending on the duration of studies.

Number of entries – single or multiple

Purpose of trip – studying at a Russian educational institution

Visa support provided by the Russian side – Official invitation in paper or electronic version issued by the MIA or MFA of Russia upon request of the Russian School or University, or a written invitation issued by the university itself

Russian Work visa for Danish citizens

Maximum stay in Russia – from 90 days and longer as per your employment contract terms. For Highly Qualified Experts a visa is issued for 3 years at once. This visa type can be prolonged while in Russia.

Number of entries – single or multiple

Purpose of trip – working under a paid labour contract for a Russian employer

Visa support provided by the Russian side – Official invitation in paper version issued by the MIA of Russia upon request of the Russian employing company

Russian Electronic visa for Danish citizens

Maximum stay in Russia – 8 days out of 30 days period

Number of entries – single 

Purpose of trip – tourism and leisure activities in Russia

Visa support provided by the Russian side-  not required. 

Step 2. Fill in the application and get the rest of documents for your visa

3 months before your trip you can start collecting the documents and apply for your visa. The list of documents includes:

For E-visa you’ll need to fill in the online form at kdmid website 4 days before the trip, and receive your visa decision in the form of a document, which you’ll print out and display at the border crossing. Step 3. Apply for your visa in authorized organisations in Denmark

After you have prepared the required documents it’s time for application. Danish citizens can apply for a Russian visa at:

Russian visa center has been endowed the functions of processing and facilitating visa applications. You can apply through it for more convenience, and to be able to have your documents proofread by specialists.

When you apply for your visa you are required to pay the visa fees.

If you wish to have your passport delivered back to you, you can pay another 350 DKK for courier delivery of 1 passport.

When you pay your fees at either the Consular section or Visa Center you’ll be given a receipt. Keep it because you’ll need to show it to get your passport back.

Step 4. Get your passport back and check the Russian visa stamp

Upon receiving your passport with visa back, carefully examine the visa stamp. It bears the following information:

If everything is right, get your things ready for traveling. Don’t forget to take your invitation from Russia and insurance policy.

Step 5. Obtain migration card and registration in Russia

After you arrive to Russia, don’t forget to obtain two more required documents:

Migration card is given out free of charge on the border. You fill in it, give the migration officer for checking and stamping, and keep during your trip to Russia. When you leave, you have to return it. If you lose it, get another one at the local migration service office.

Registration is required if you plan to stay longer than 7 working days in Russia. Get it from the hotel management, or ask the owner of your apartment to register you at the local post or police office.
